Andrej Kunca

Researcher

Andrej is a team member of the Upgrade of the Centre of Excellence LignoSilva project. His main responsibilities include research on fungal pathogens involved in the microbiological degradation of wood, both in forests and in wood storage.

He studied at the Technical University in Zvolen, Faculty of Ecology and Environmental Sciences (1992–1997), and obtained his PhD at the Faculty of Forestry of the same university in 2002. Since 1997, he has been working as a researcher at the Forest Research Institute in Zvolen. He gained international experience during research stays at the USDA-ARS in Beltsville, MD, USA (2001), and at the Forest Research Institute in Göttingen, Germany (2002).

His professional focus is forest pests, with a particular emphasis on fungal pathogens. From 2006 to 2025, he served as head of the Department of Forest Protection. Since 2020, he has also been deputy leader of the IUFRO working group 7.03.10 Methodology of Forest Insect and Disease Survey in Central Europe.

He is the author or co-author of numerous scientific and professional papers. As of 2025, his work has been cited 1,857 times, with an h-index of 18 and an i10-index of 39. In addition, he is a co-author of several patents, the most recent being a European patent (2024) for improving forest protection against the Hylobius abietis pest on spruce seedlings.

Since January 2024, Andrej Kunca has been a member of the LignoSilva Centre of Excellence team, contributing to Work Package 5 (WP5).

In his free time, he enjoys fishing and the tranquility of nature in all its forms.
